Labor to Crack Down on Supermarket Price Gouging

On the second day of federal election campaign, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has vowed to make supermarket price gouging illegal if re-elected. He plans to impose heavy fines on retailers that overcharge customers, taking inspiration from EU and UK consumer laws. The ACCC has called for action on “shrinkflation,” misleading promotions, and price transparency but stopped short of labeling Coles and Woolworths a duopoly. Albanese says Australians won’t be treated like “mugs” at the checkout anymore.
